On my way back from the gun show at the Linn County Expo Center yesterday I stopped in at Garland's nursery to see if they had anything new and worth buying. This was a strange stop for me as I had heard on the news that it was supposed to snow today! Why did I stop. Well, I wanted to make sure that they had stocked up on a new product from Oregon Soil Corporation, their pure organic worm castings. I have read all the technical reports and this is an outstanding product according to the research done at both the Ohio State University and North Carolina State University. They had invested almost a million dollars studying the beneficial effect of pure organic worm castings on a wide variety of flowers and vegetables. Garland's nursery is one of 3 sites in the Corvallis area that was offered exclusive rights for distribution of the product as it is such limited supply. The other two locations chosen were Shonnard's out toward Philomath and the 1st Alternative Co-Op. I purchased an 8 quart bag at Garland's and was told they also have a 12 quart bag and a 16 quart bag. At $15 for the 8 quart bag, it is not inexpensive but it should be well worth it. I was anticipating paying $2.00 a quart and last summer at the farmer's market some were charging $5 for a one quart bag. Beware of the difference between Black Gold at a much lower price as that product is not 100% pure organic worm castings mere potting soil supplemented with fillers and "some" worm castings. Know what you are buying and support a new and emerging local company.
